Rental Terms & Conditions
MacQueen’s Bike Shop location: 430 Queen Street, Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Rental Reservations/Hours: MacQueen’s Bike Shop & Island Tours accepts advance reservations for rental periods of a minimum three days. As a specialty tour outfitter, priority for our rental equipment is given to customers requesting multi-day rentals. Shorter term rentals (1-2 days in duration) are available on a walk-in basis only.
Maximum daily rental period: 24 hours.
Equipment pickups must be arranged during the store’s operating hours.
When arranged in advance, we’re flexible with after hour equipment returns. (ex. if you pick up your bike at 9 am and prefer to return it at 7 pm instead of by 9 am the next morning or at 5 pm on a Sunday, so long as our staff is aware and agreeable in advance, there is no extra charge to accept your equipment return after the store has closed.)
Summer Rental Hours (May-Sep.):
Monday to Saturday – 8:30 am to 5 pm
Sunday – 10 am to 2 pm (by advance appointment only in May, June & September)
We close on statutory holidays and thank you for your understanding.
Rental Costs: Currency: CAD $. Your bicycle rental cost covers equipment as described, and initial adjustments to the equipment by our staff (outfitting) at our commercial premises.
MacQueen’s bike rentals include:
-Helmet
-Water bottle cage
-Rear Carrier (Hybrid, E-bike and tandem models only)
-Platform pedals

*We reserve the right to provide 1 lock for every 2 bikes/contract, and to limit emergency repair kit elements to 1 per party traveling together. Tubes or patches, if used, are payable by the customer.
Emergency road repair services are prioritized for MacQueen’s Island Tours customers. Remote service calls are not included with or necessarily available for independent rental packages. If a technician is available, any off-site service calls requested by rental clients will be assessed fees based on mileage and hourly wages. Customers who’ve engaged independent rental services only may experience delays for remote service calls, depending on staff availability.
Rental Booking Deposit, Final Payment & Security Deposit:
1. Direct client bookings: A personal credit card guarantee is required to process your booking request. Presentation of valid photo ID and valid credit card (driver’s license, passport, voluntary ID card) is required upon delivery of equipment. Payment for confirmed services is processed locally upon delivery of equipment. Your credit card will be stored in a vault for use with:
a) cancellation penalty in the event your booking is cancelled after confirmation and
b) the obligatory security deposit in the event of damage of theft to equipment. Credit card(s) will be preauthorized & tokenized on the day of pickup to cover any eventual late returns, theft of or damage to the equipment. Authorized amounts may take up to 30 days after departure to be released by your bank or financial institution and MacQueen’s will not be responsible for any resulting fees or charges.
Payment for your pre-determined rental period must be negotiated in full locally and a waiver signed before equipment is released into your possession.
2. Tour Operators/Organizers: While you may guarantee client services against an agency credit card, prepayment via e-transfer must be received in our account no later than 31 days in advance of service initiation. If interested in lowering administrative and banking costs, we accept lump sum deposits and apply individual deposits incrementally as bookings are received. Services may be cancelled and corresponding cancellation penalty applied if e-transfer payment in full is not confirmed in our account per that schedule. Local submission of a client credit card is obligatory for the equipment security deposit, and signature of a waiver will be required from each rental customer and/or their guardian in the case of minors.
Tour operators / 3rd party agents booking on behalf of others must make their clients fully aware of all MacQueen’s rental terms & conditions prior to making a booking on their behalf.
E-bikes:
In Prince Edward Island, to operate a power-assisted bicycle you must be 16 years of age or older. MacQueen’s does not accept responsibility for rental clients who do not comply with provincial regulations.
Responsibility for Damage or Loss: Rental customers agree they will return the equipment in the same good condition as when received, ordinary wear and tear excepted, and to repair and replace lost or stolen, damaged or broken bicycles or parts or to reimburse MacQueen’s for said equipment. MacQueen’s does not offer theft/damage insurance. In the event equipment is stolen or damaged, the renter named in the rental contract accepts legal responsibility for reimbursing its full retail replacement value.
Rental Cancellation Policy: Our summer season on Prince Edward Island is relatively short, and cancelled bookings impact our operation and bottom line. To avoid cancellation penalties, avoid reserving equipment before your travel is confirmed. If visiting PEI, consider investing in cancellation insurance at the time you book services to protect your travel investment from unforeseen circumstances including, but not limited to, weather, illness, injury or changes to your travel schedule.

Cancellation refers to full or partial cancellation of services. (Ex. if you reserve a bike for 8 days, and 35 days or more before the service is scheduled to begin, MacQueen’s receives your written request to reduce your rental period to 7 days, then a 5% cancellation penalty would be applied on cancelled services. Cancelled services = the price reduction between the initial and adjusted rental periods). Credits or refunds are not available for early equipment returns. Applicable advance cancellation penalties will be applied to your credit card upon confirmation of your written (digital) cancellation request in our system. |
Late Return Fee / Rental Extensions: If current availability permits, your ongoing rental can be extended in our system. Confirmed rental extensions are issued an email confirmation for your protection and ours. If you’ve not confirmed your rental extension in advance, equipment not returned per pacted schedule may be reported by MacQueen’s as stolen to local authorities. Late returns are subject to a penalty of 1.5X the regular daily rate. MacQueen’s reserves the right to process the full retail replacement value of equipment not returned per pacted schedule.
Maintenance & Responsibility: Although all of our bikes are professionally serviced between rentals, bicycles may occasionally require tuning during a rental period. MacQueen’s covers routine maintenance of equipment only when delivered at our shop. MacQueen’s industry suppliers are responsible for structural deficiencies such as defective frames, worn bottom brackets, suspension and wheel hubs. MacQueen’s does not provide free emergency service calls and is not responsible for the following occurrences during bike rental:
punctures / broken spokes / broken chains / broken derailleurs / broken drop-outs / wheel rim damage / torn saddles / stripped threads on pedal crank / damage beyond the control of MacQueen’s or the result of rider use, misuse or abuse.
If undertaking an unsupported bicycle tour we strongly recommend that you have some basic bicycle maintenance knowledge.
Travel Cancellation/Theft Insurance: We do not sell travel cancellation or theft insurance. If interested in acquiring travel or other insurance coverage for rental equipment, we recommend checking to see if your homeowners policy offers coverage, purchasing it locally in your province/state/country of residence, or alternatively checking into options with these insurance companies with local offices in PEI:
Blue Cross® – 1-877-909-7686
The Co-Operators – 1-800-984-0429
The Fine Print: A liability waiver must be signed and credit card guarantee provided before equipment is released to the renter. MacQueen’s Bike Shop & Island Tours assumes no responsibility, however caused, for injury, loss or damage to person or property in connection with any service resulting directly from the following: acts of God, detention, annoyance, terrorism, thefts, pilferage, civil disturbances, government restrictions or regulations, strikes, delays and expenses arising from quarantine, failure of any means of conveyance to arrive or depart as scheduled, discrepancies or change in transit or accommodation services over which we have no control or other financial loss whether to persons or property arising out of certain risks and danger which may occur during your holiday, including but not limited to the hazards of activities in general. Our contract is for rental only and not for sale of equipment. The renter agrees that he/she will rent the items(s) herein requested and that they will at all times remain the property of the rental agent named in the rental contract, that he/she will examine the said item(s) upon delivery, and return them in the same condition as when rented, by the stipulated date/time of return, that he/she will pay all charges for said item promptly when due, and that in the event equipment is stolen or damaged, the renter named in the rental contract will be responsible for its retail replacement value, and the rental agent is hereby released from all claims arising therefrom. All charges are based on the time the item is in the renter’s possession whether in use or not. The rental agent is not responsible for accidents or injuries caused directly or indirectly in the use of the rented item.
